What keeps gay men from successfully fulfilling their desire for a long-term partner? Through examination, exploration, and group sharing, this workshop will focus on issues that occur following four months of initial dating. A brief review of "introductory" dating will serve as a framework to discuss later stage issues, including: clarifying dating desires and goals; understanding and working with expectations and intentions; past relationship/family issues/relationship patterns and their current impact; specific challenges with intimacy, closeness and connectedness; and comprehending, dealing with, and accepting differences. Special emphasis will be given to variables which have a particularly powerful impact in dating, including HIV, race, age, sex and sexuality, and socio-economic status. The workshop will include small and large group discussion, exercises, role-plays, and dyad interactions. This workshop is for men who find dating challenging and are interested in improving their experiences through frank discussion, feedback, taking risks, and learning from other men with similar struggles. |
